The Lad and the Lion
A young prince is removed from the struggle surrounding his throne and eventually finds himself adrift at sea with a lion. Cast ashore on the North African coast, the boy grows through danger and companionship while political intrigue in Europe continues to shape the question of his identity and inheritance.
Steamship travel, dynastic politics and European colonial rule in North Africa give the story the atmosphere of the years before the First World War. The unnamed monarchy is imaginary, but the prince's struggle for survival and inheritance is played out against a recognisably early-twentieth-century world of imperial routes and unstable royal politics.
