In 26 BCE Rufus Varro is ordered to carry a strongbox to Capua and meet Marcus Sura, an assassin working for the same intelligence network. He finds Sura murdered in a brothel, stabbed before the exchange can take place. Varro and Manius investigate the occupants and associates of the dead agent, but suspicion is easier to find than evidence.
The strongbox and Sura’s intended target make the killing politically dangerous. Varro must decide whether solving the murder also requires completing the assassin’s commission. Away from Rome, Agrippa’s authority is less immediate and local interests can obstruct the inquiry. The novella asks whether a spy who identifies a killer can remain an investigator or must become an executioner in order to survive.
