In 26 BCE the slave trader Herennius is robbed and stabbed after a private gathering. Augustus takes an interest in the murder, and Marcus Agrippa assigns Rufus Varro to question the guests. A corrupt advocate, a young poet and other apparently respectable witnesses all have motives, yet the evidence repeatedly points away from them.

Agrippa simultaneously sends Manius, Varro’s former-gladiator bodyguard, into the circle of the demagogue Publius Carbo. Intelligence suggests that Carbo is planning violence against Rome’s Jewish quarter. The two investigations reveal a city in which murder, political agitation and official secrecy reinforce one another. Varro and Manius can uncover the truth, but exposing it may be more dangerous than allowing the guilty to remain protected.
