Marcus, the son of a Roman tribune, is brought to Britain as a child and grows up speaking local languages and understanding customs that many Roman officers dismiss. An encounter with Boudica gives him a brooch and a personal connection to the Iceni queen. When his father dies, Marcus reluctantly accepts military rank and the duties of imperial service.

The revolt of AD 60–61 forces him to fight people he has known and respected. He witnesses atrocities committed by both rebels and Romans, and for a time crosses the boundary between the two camps. The brooch becomes a reminder that neither inherited allegiance can resolve his moral conflict; Marcus must choose a future that is not defined solely by Rome or tribal vengeance.
