Dr Richard Adams enters north-central Africa to rescue his son from the warlike Fung and joins Professor Higgs and Captain Orme on an expedition to the mountain kingdom of Mur. The isolated Abati people claim descent from the Queen of Sheba and are ruled by Maqueda, whose position is threatened by internal conspiracy and external siege.
The travellers agree to destroy the Fung’s colossal lion-god, Harmac, in exchange for help recovering Roderick. Engineering, archaeology, romance and warfare converge as Mur’s ancient prestige proves insufficient against political division and a determined enemy.
