Major Alan Vernon, ruined by a fraudulent financial scheme and desperate to secure a future with Barbara Champers, travels with his servant Jeekie to the West African country of the Asiki in search of gold. There he encounters Little Bonsa, the yellow idol, and the Asika, a priestess-queen who claims each chosen foreigner as her husband.
Alan’s promised wealth becomes inseparable from captivity, ritual power and the fate of the Asika’s previous consorts. The novel combines financial satire in London with a lost-world expedition, showing greed and speculation mirrored by the lethal cult of gold he finds abroad.
