Benita Clifford travels to southern Africa to join her father and becomes involved with the obsessive Jacob Meyer in a search for Portuguese treasure hidden at Bambatse. The ruined stronghold is guarded by the Makalanga people and by traditions concerning the spirit of a woman who died protecting the hoard.
Jacob’s greed and attempts to dominate Benita turn the expedition into psychological captivity, while supernatural warnings and the fortress’s secret passages offer possible escape. The novel combines treasure hunting, romance and Gothic possession against the landscape of colonial Rhodesia.
