Morris Monk, an inventor experimenting with long-distance communication, is engaged to his practical cousin Mary Porson when he rescues Stella Fregelius from a shipwreck. Stella’s spiritual imagination and musical gifts awaken a different part of Morris’s character, creating a bond that unsettles the future others have arranged for him.

After loss separates the lovers physically, Morris becomes convinced that consciousness may survive death and that his inventions can reach beyond ordinary limits. The novel combines a romantic triangle with Gothic spiritualism, asking whether love is a material attachment, an ethical duty or a connection that persists after death.

The scientific element reflects a period fascinated by wireless communication, psychical research and the possibility that new technologies might explain experiences previously treated as supernatural. Morris’s experiments therefore connect invention with grief.
