In 1921 the American Julia Pavernen travels to Shanghai with her Chinese friend Emily Howe and enters a society divided between immense commercial wealth and political violence. Julia’s love for Emily’s brother Tommy ties her to the Howe family, while both women challenge convention through relationships and political commitments that place them close to the struggles reshaping the city.
Published in the United States as From a Far Land, the novel follows the same characters through the Warlord Era, Nationalist rule, war with Japan, renewed civil war and the establishment of the People’s Republic. Its long view of Shanghai shows how foreign concessions, Chinese capitalism and revolutionary idealism are successively transformed, compromised or destroyed between 1921 and 1952.
