Newly promoted Captain Billy Boyle is drawn into two investigations in wartime England. His childhood friend Eugene “Tree” Jackson asks him to help an African American soldier who faces execution for a murder he did not commit, while British intelligence orders Billy to examine the unexplained death of an accountant in a nearby village.
The cases expose different systems of concealment: military segregation protects a convenient accusation, while intelligence officers restrict Billy’s access to witnesses and evidence. Working between the all-Black 617th Tank Destroyer Battalion and a suspicious English community, Billy must discover whether the two crimes are connected and save men whom their own institutions are prepared to sacrifice.
