November 1139. Civil war has sent refugees toward Shrewsbury, but two children of a noble family and the nun accompanying them fail to arrive from Worcester. Brother Cadfael joins the search and soon finds evidence that their disappearance is connected with violence on the road.
The investigation takes Cadfael into winter-bound countryside where fugitives, soldiers and displaced families have all been thrown together by the conflict between Stephen and Matilda. Finding the missing travellers becomes inseparable from solving a murder and protecting people whose identities carry political as well as personal danger.
