Summer 1143. Two travellers arrive at Shrewsbury Abbey carrying the body of a man who died far from home. The dead man’s religious opinions soon become a matter of dispute, and his young attendant is drawn into accusations of heresy at a time when theological error can have serious legal and social consequences.
When another death follows, Brother Cadfael is asked to determine whether the two events are connected. The inquiry moves between questions of doctrine, inheritance and personal hostility, requiring Cadfael to distinguish genuine belief from charges used for private advantage. In the unsettled England of the Anarchy, the abbey’s attempt to judge fairly becomes as important as identifying the murderer.
