In 1892, Arthur Conan Doyle receives a succession of parcels addressed to Sherlock Holmes. Each contains a human remain—a lock of hair, a severed finger and eventually a dead man’s hand—and the only consistent clue is a Roman postmark.
Oscar Wilde persuades Doyle to travel with him to Italy, where the parcels become connected to a missing girl and secrets reaching into the Vatican. Moving through Rome while someone attempts to obstruct their inquiry, they must identify the victims and understand why the sender has chosen Doyle’s fictional detective as the intended recipient.
