In 1862, eleven-year-old Amrie St. Pierre watches Union gunboats move up the Mississippi after the fall of New Orleans. Her family lives near St. Francisville, Louisiana, between the threatened strongholds of Vicksburg and Port Hudson, where shortages, raids and military violence transform daily life for the women and children left behind.

The St. Pierres' abolitionist beliefs have long separated them from their neighbours, but survival forces the community to cooperate. After Amrie intervenes in an attack on her mother and a hidden secret brings Federal suspicion upon the town, she confronts the violence of both armies and her own capacity to act in defence of the people she loves.
