C. S. Harris is the pen name of American historian and novelist Candice Proctor, best known for the Sebastian St. Cyr historical mysteries. She holds a doctorate in nineteenth-century European history and has written more than thirty novels, including historical romances under her own name and contemporary thrillers as C. S. Graham. Her academic background informs the political detail, social history and international tensions that shape her fiction, particularly her treatment of Britain during the Regency and Napoleonic periods.

The Sebastian St. Cyr series begins with What Angels Fear, set in London in 1811. Its protagonist, Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, is an aristocratic former cavalry and intelligence officer whose experiences in the Napoleonic Wars have left him psychologically scarred. His murder investigations expose corruption among ministers, royalty and the aristocracy while also exploring poverty, prostitution, child exploitation and life in London’s poorer districts. Harris combines intricate mysteries with continuing stories involving Sebastian’s wife, the reform-minded Hero Jarvis, his disputed parentage and the political manoeuvring surrounding the Prince Regent. She has also written the standalone historical novel Good Time Coming, a coming-of-age story set in Louisiana during the American Civil War.
