Steps to the Gallows
London is being entertained by a scandal newspaper whose editor seems able to uncover political secrets, sexual indiscretions and private corruption with unnerving accuracy. When the editor is murdered and the printing press smashed, the paper’s financier hires the twin investigators Peter and Paul Skillen to identify the killer and discover who was desperate enough to silence the publication.
The brothers find no shortage of suspects among the people exposed or threatened by the newspaper. Their investigation moves through Regency London’s publishing trade, political factions and theatrical world, where information can be bought, stolen or turned into public humiliation. Solving the murder requires them to determine which scandal was dangerous enough to make destroying the press worth killing for.
