In 1859, a child playing hide-and-seek in Spondon churchyard discovers the body of Cedric Norton, a senior director of the Midland Railway, concealed in a freshly dug grave. Inspector Robert Colbeck and Sergeant Victor Leeming travel to Derbyshire to determine why an influential railway man was killed and who could have moved the body without attracting attention.
Norton’s position in the Midland Railway means that the murder may involve more than private hostility. Contracts, engineering decisions, promotion and money provide motives within an industry expanding fast enough to create both fortunes and resentments. Colbeck’s knowledge of railway operations helps him distinguish an ordinary personal dispute from a crime made possible by the timetables and movements of the railway itself.
