Rage of the Assassin
London, 1817. A crowd gathers outside Covent Garden Theatre to see the celebrated actress Hannah Granville, but a gunshot leaves reform-minded MP Sir Roger Mellanby dead before she emerges. Mellanby’s political positions have created enemies at Westminster and within his own family, yet the Bow Street authorities are quick to treat the killing as a conventional assassination.
Mellanby’s friend Seth Hooper turns instead to twin investigators Paul and Peter Skillen. They begin testing the dead man’s political connections, private relationships and movements around the theatre while the gunman struggles to escape the consequences of the crime. The case unfolds in a London unsettled by post-war unemployment and demands for reform, where political violence can be disguised as personal revenge and vice versa.
