William Still

William Still was an African American abolitionist, businessman and organiser in Philadelphia. As chairman of a vigilance committee, he assisted hundreds of people escaping slavery through the network later called the Underground Railroad.

Still carefully recorded the experiences and family connections of freedom seekers, later publishing them in The Underground Rail Road . His work preserved testimony that also helped separated relatives locate one another after emancipation.
