What begins as an intelligence mission draws him into desert warfare, imperial rivalries and the competing claims of people whose homeland is being treated as a strategic corridor.
The novel places the First World War outside the familiar European trenches and examines the alliance of British, Indian, Arab and Ottoman interests in the region. The title’s contested idea of possession gives the military adventure a political edge, emphasising that wartime promises and intelligence operations would shape Palestine long after the campaign.
