Southern Africa during the diamond rush and the expansion of British commercial power. The novel follows the conversion of mineral discovery into organised political power. Small prospectors are displaced by consolidation, personal rivalries become corporate struggles, and dreams of settlement lead towards the seizure of land beyond the Cape. Zouga must confront the difference between exploration and possession, while Ralph learns to treat relationships, race and loyalty as assets to be managed. Against the growth of Cecil Rhodes’s influence and the movement towards colonial occupation, the Ballantynes’ family conflicts mirror a wider contest over who will own southern Africa’s wealth and determine its future.
