Rhodesia across two periods of violent conflict. In the late nineteenth century, Ralph Ballantyne and his family participate in the drive for land, mines and political control north of the Limpopo. Expansion provokes armed resistance from Ndebele and Shona communities, and the confidence of settlers is shattered by rebellion, siege and reprisals. The Ballantynes’ wealth ties them to the colonial project even when individual members recognise the cost imposed on the people whose country is being remade around them.

The later narrative moves to the 1970s, when another generation confronts the Rhodesian Bush War and the collapse of white minority rule. Guerrilla warfare, counter-insurgency and divided political loyalties reopen grievances created during the first occupation. Family members who inherited farms and status also inherit unresolved violence, while black and white characters pursue incompatible visions of independence. By joining the First Chimurenga to the struggle that produces modern Zimbabwe, the novel presents colonial conquest and decolonisation as connected phases of the same historical conflict rather than separate crises.
