A Falcon Flies

Southern and central Africa in 1860. Dr Robyn Ballantyne returns to the continent of her birth with her brother Zouga, a celebrated soldier who hopes to find their missing missionary father and build a new fortune. Robyn brings medical training, religious conviction and a determination to oppose the slave trade, but the expedition is carried aboard the vessel of Mungo St John, an American trader whose wealth depends upon the very system she condemns. Captain Clinton Codrington offers her a more respectable future, yet Robyn’s attraction to Mungo complicates every moral judgement she makes.

The journey follows the Zambezi into regions contested by traders, missionaries, local rulers and men seeking ivory, land and labour. Zouga’s ambitions increasingly diverge from Robyn’s humanitarian mission, establishing the competing impulses that will shape later Ballantyne generations. The novel treats exploration as both physical adventure and colonial intrusion: medicine and abolition travel beside commerce, violence and imperial ambition. Robyn must decide whether personal loyalty can coexist with her principles, while the siblings discover that returning to Africa does not restore the family past they imagined.
