Historical person
1853–1917
Leander Starr Jameson was a physician, colonial administrator and politician whose career became inseparable from British expansion in southern Africa. A close associate of Cecil Rhodes, he administered territories controlled by the British South Africa Company and in 1895 led the failed armed incursion into the South African Republic that became known as the Jameson Raid.
Jameson served the British South Africa Company in southern Africa, became administrator of Mashonaland and Matabeleland and led the failed Jameson Raid of 1895–1896. He later served as prime minister of the Cape Colony.
Wilbur Smith’s Men of Men places Leander Starr Jameson among the real imperial adventurers and administrators whose ambitions shape the Ballantyne family’s movement from the Kimberley diamond fields towards territory north of the Cape. Alongside Cecil Rhodes, Jameson represents the conversion of prospecting and company power into colonial expansion, helping the novel connect private fortunes to the political project that would create Rhodesia.
