Julia Golding is a British author of historical adventure, fantasy and young-adult fiction who also publishes under the names Joss Stirling and Eve Edwards. Born in 1969, she studied English at the University of Cambridge before joining the Foreign Office and serving in Poland. She later completed a doctorate in English Romantic literature at the University of Oxford and worked for Oxfam as a policy adviser on conflict and its effects on civilians. Golding has written more than sixty books, often combining detailed historical settings with mystery, romance, travel and resourceful young protagonists.

Golding is particularly known for the Cat Royal series, which follows an orphan growing up around London’s Theatre Royal during the Georgian period. Its opening novel, The Diamond of Drury Lane, won the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and a Nestlé Children’s Book Prize in 2006. Her other historically based fiction includes the Jane Austen Investigates mysteries, the Darcie Lock wartime adventures and the Lacey Chronicles, written as Eve Edwards. Beginning with The Other Countess, the Lacey books are set in Elizabethan England and explore romance, family duty, social rank and religious division, while Dusk and Dawn move to the First World War. Across these novels, Golding frequently places girls and women at the centre of periods in which their choices were restricted by class, convention and circumstance.
