London, January 1554. Jack Blackjack wakes beside a murdered man and discovers that the purse he stole from the victim contains information several powerful men are determined to recover. With the city gates guarded and rumours of rebellion spreading, escape is no longer a simple solution.
Thomas Wyatt’s army is advancing against Mary I, while supporters of Lady Jane Grey and Princess Elizabeth are watched for treason. Jack must identify the dead man and understand the message he carried before the government, the rebels or the killer decide that an unreliable cutpurse knows too much.
Wyatt’s rising makes Jack useful to several sides because a thief can move through streets and taverns more easily than an obvious royal agent. That freedom is deceptive: possession of the message means every faction may assume he belongs to another. The mystery therefore uses London’s political confusion to turn Jack’s usual instinct for self-preservation into a liability when neutrality itself becomes suspicious.
