1649 CE

Charles I was tried and executed in January 1649 after the failure of negotiation and renewed war. The act was unprecedented in English history: a king was publicly judged and killed by an authority claiming to represent the people. It shocked monarchies across Europe and divided opinion within Britain and Ireland.

The execution mattered because it transformed rebellion into regime change. It abolished the monarchy and House of Lords, opened the way for the Commonwealth and made the army central to politics. It also created martyrs, fugitives and a future politics of vengeance after the Restoration.
