The Battle of Flodden was fought in 1513 between England and Scotland while Henry VIII was campaigning in France. James IV of Scotland invaded England in support of France and was defeated by an English army led in part by Catherine of Aragon’s regency government. The Scottish king and much of the nobility were killed.

Flodden mattered because it devastated Scotland’s ruling elite and left the kingdom under another minority government. It also reinforced the danger of Anglo-Scottish conflict within wider European alliances. The battle haunted Scottish political memory for generations.
