In 1867 Flashman reaches Trieste after escaping Mexico and accepts a profitable commission to escort silver to Robert Napier’s army in Abyssinia. His reputation causes Napier to send him beyond the British lines to negotiate with regional opponents of Emperor Tewodros II, transforming a transport job into an undercover mission through unfamiliar highland politics.
Captured by Tewodros’s forces, Flashman enters the emperor’s mobile court and observes the hostages whose detention prompted the expedition. He survives the approach to Maqdala, the British assault and Tewodros’s death while attempting to attach himself to whichever side offers safety. The final Flashman novel combines personal farce with the immense logistical achievement and destructive aftermath of the 1868 campaign.
