Second Anglo-Sikh War

The Second Anglo-Sikh War grew from the uprising at Multan in 1848 and the spread of rebellion through the Punjab. British political supervision after the first war, reductions in aristocratic authority and the treatment of Jind Kaur contributed to wider resentment.
Campaigns developed around Multan and along the Chenab and Jhelum. Major actions included Ramnagar, Sadullapur, Chillianwala and Gujrat, while the siege and capture of Multan released additional troops for the final campaign.
The defeat and surrender of the Sikh forces allowed the East India Company to annex the Punjab on 29 March 1849, ending the independent Sikh Empire.
