Battle of Ferozeshah

The Battle of Ferozeshah was fought on 21 and 22 December 1845 around a fortified Sikh encampment. British and East India Company troops launched costly assaults against prepared positions defended by powerful artillery.

Fighting continued through the night and resumed the following morning. Ammunition shortages, exhaustion and disordered formations placed Gough and Hardinge in a precarious position before the Sikh army withdrew.

Ferozeshah became one of the defining battles of the war because of the scale of the losses and the continuing dispute over Sikh high command and the missed opportunity to destroy the opposing army.
