Sigrid Undset

Sigrid Undset was a Norwegian novelist best known for historical fiction set in medieval Scandinavia. Born in Denmark in 1882 and raised in Norway, she developed a deep interest in history, religion and the moral pressures that shape private life. Her fiction often explores marriage, family, faith and personal responsibility, presenting historical characters with unusual psychological depth.

Her greatest work is the Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy, which follows a woman’s life in fourteenth-century Norway from youth and marriage to spiritual maturity. Undset also wrote The Master of Hestviken, another major medieval sequence, as well as contemporary novels and essays. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1928, largely in recognition of her powerful portrayals of life in the medieval North.
