The Third English Civil War began after the Scottish Covenanter government recognised Charles II and required him to accept the Covenant. Parliament treated the alliance as a renewed Stuart military threat. Oliver Cromwell led the English army into Scotland in 1650 and won a dramatic victory at Dunbar after weeks of manoeuvre and supply pressure.
Charles II was crowned at Scone in 1651 and then marched south with a largely Scottish army, hoping English Royalists would rise in support. Few joined him, and Parliamentarian forces concentrated around Worcester. Cromwell’s victory there on 3 September 1651 destroyed the invasion and forced Charles into exile.
