Johnny Swift Thrillers

The Johnny Swift Thrillers follow a reckless fictional British diplomat, soldier and intelligence operative through the political and military crises of the First World War. The Assassins places him among the Sarajevo conspirators before the murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand; The Dardanelles Conspiracy sends him to Constantinople and then Gallipoli; Enemies and Allies brings him into British and French intelligence during the Mata Hari affair, the Zimmermann Telegram and the crisis surrounding the Nivelle Offensive.

Bardos repeatedly puts Swift alongside documented historical figures while allowing the fictional agent to move between events that were separate in reality. The sequence therefore combines espionage thriller plotting with a broad chronology of the war’s diplomatic and intelligence fronts, linking Sarajevo, Ottoman strategy, Room 40, French counter-intelligence and the strains inside the Allied coalition.
