Reginald Hall was a Royal Navy officer who became Director of Naval Intelligence in 1914 and remained in the post through the First World War. Known as “Blinker” Hall, he oversaw an intelligence organisation that combined human sources, censorship, communications interception and the codebreaking work of Room 40.
Hall directed British naval intelligence during World War I and was central to the strategic use of Room 40 intelligence, including the Zimmermann Telegram. Reginald Hall was born in Salisbury and died in London.
