Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

On 28 June 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, visited Sarajevo with his wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg. Members of Young Bosnia, supplied with weapons through Serbian nationalist networks, positioned themselves along the motorcade route. Nedeljko Čabrinović threw a bomb that failed to kill the couple, and the official visit continued amid confusion.

Later that day the Archduke’s car took a wrong turn and stopped near Gavrilo Princip, who shot Franz Ferdinand and Sophie at close range. Both died shortly afterwards. Austria-Hungary treated the assassination as an opportunity to confront Serbia, while alliance commitments and mobilisation plans transformed the dispute into the July Crisis and ultimately a general European war.

This event is the most specific context for fiction about the Sarajevo conspirators, the royal visit and the immediate act that precipitated the July Crisis. Alan Bardos’s The Assassins places a fictional British agent inside the conspirators’ circle while retaining Franz Ferdinand, Sophie, Princip and Čabrinović as historical figures.
