Enver Pasha

1881–1922

Enver Pasha rose through the Young Turk movement and became one of the leading figures of the Committee of Union and Progress. As minister of war he helped align the Ottoman Empire with Germany and the Central Powers in 1914 and exercised major influence over military policy during the First World War. His career included the disastrous Caucasus campaign at Sarikamish and central responsibility within the wartime Ottoman leadership.

After the empire’s defeat he went into exile and was killed in Central Asia in 1922. Enver was one of the principal Ottoman leaders during World War I and a key figure in the empire’s military and political alignment with the Central Powers. Enver Pasha was born in Constantinople and died in near Dushanbe.
