Reign of Louis XIV

Louis XIV became king in 1643 as a child and ruled until 1715. His early years were dominated by the regency of Anne of Austria, the ministry of Cardinal Mazarin and the upheaval of the Fronde. After Mazarin’s death in 1661, Louis began his personal rule and increasingly concentrated political life around the crown and, later, the court at Versailles.

The reign mattered because France became the leading continental monarchy of its age while sustaining expensive wars, court patronage, administrative expansion and tighter religious control. Nobles competed for access and office as the monarchy used ceremony, military power and royal service to reinforce authority. The result was a setting in which private relationships and court advancement could have direct political consequences.

The Vicomte de Bragelonne, Louise de la Vallière and The Man in the Iron Mask belong to the early part of this reign. Dumas follows Louis XIV as he moves beyond Mazarin’s supervision, pursues Louise de la Vallière and confronts the independent ambitions of the aging musketeers.
