Jacob

1792 BCE–1645 BCE

Jacob was a patriarch of the Hebrew Bible whose twelve sons become ancestors of the tribes of Israel. Jacob served as prophet and Patriarchs. Jacob is generally dated to 1792 BCE–1645 BCE.

His life includes rivalry with Esau, service under Laban, marriages to Leah and Rachel, and the family crisis that leads to migration into Egypt. Jacob was born in Canaan and died in Ancient Egypt.

In Angela Hunt’s Brothers, Famine drives Jacob’s sons to Egypt, where Simeon bows before a powerful official without recognising the brother he once helped sell. Joseph remembers the pit and years of servitude, while Simeon’s imprisonment leaves him dependent on Mandisa, a widowed interpreter who sees tenderness beneath his defiance. In Angela Hunt’s Journey, Manasseh expects his position as Joseph’s elder son to secure his place among both Egyptians and Hebrews, but Jacob’s blessing gives precedence to the younger Ephraim. Further fictional perspectives on Jacob can be found in Gilbert MorrisThe Gate of Heaven, Anita Diamant’s The Red Tent, Gilbert Morris’ Till Shiloh Comes, and Angela Hunt’s Unwavering Heart.
