Historical person
Joseph
1563 BCE–1453 BCE
Joseph was a son of Jacob whose story in Genesis takes him from slavery to high office in Egypt. Sold by his brothers, Joseph interprets dreams, prepares Egypt for famine and later saves and reconciles with his family.
Anita Diamant’s The Red Tent places Joseph within a narrative shaped by family, marriage and personal loyalty, social change and the pressures of ordinary life, and court politics and dynastic power.
