Joseph Narrative in Ancient Egypt
c. 1700–1500 BCE
Joseph is sold by his brothers and carried into Egypt, where service in Potiphar’s household, imprisonment and the interpretation of royal dreams eventually bring him before Pharaoh. His plan to store grain during years of abundance gives him authority during a regional famine.
When Jacob’s sons travel to Egypt for food, Joseph tests them before revealing his identity and arranging the family’s settlement. The story joins Egyptian court and administrative imagery to a theological account of providence, guilt, forgiveness and the survival of Israel’s ancestors.
Proposals connecting Joseph with particular Egyptian dynasties remain speculative. This setting uses a broad ancient-Egyptian frame for the biblical narrative and for fiction that expands the lives of Joseph, his brothers, Ephraim and Manasseh.
