Dionysus

Dionysus was the Greek god associated with wine, theatre, ecstatic worship and altered states. Greek myth gives several accounts of his birth and travels, while his cult became important in civic festivals as well as more ecstatic religious practice.

Dionysian worship involved wine, procession, music and forms of ecstatic religious experience, and the god was closely associated with the development of Greek theatre through festivals such as the City Dionysia at Athens. Myths repeatedly portray resistance to Dionysus as disastrous, as in the story of Pentheus. The god’s cult and imagery later spread widely through the Hellenistic and Roman worlds.

Euripides’ The Bacchae and Other Plays gives Dionysus his most sustained dramatic role, sending the god to Thebes in disguise to punish Pentheus and a city that refuses to recognise his divinity. Ovid’s Metamorphoses carries Dionysian myths into a Roman poem of transformation, desire and divine punishment. In Homer’s The Iliad, Dionysus enters through inherited mythic stories such as the persecution of his nurses by Lycurgus, a reminder that the Trojan epic’s gods possess histories beyond the immediate war. The Odyssey likewise preserves Dionysian tradition in passing mythological references, placing him within the larger divine world through which Odysseus’s story is told.
