Before the First World War, the Ramsay family and their guests spend the summer on the Isle of Skye, where a proposed trip to the lighthouse becomes entangled with marriage, parenthood, artistic ambition and domestic power. During the central passage, years pass through an empty house as war and family deaths are reported almost incidentally. The survivors return after the conflict and attempt the postponed journey. By placing intimate relationships on either side of the war, the novel captures Edwardian family life and the dislocation that followed 1914 without turning military events into a conventional battlefield narrative.
