The Viking Wars of Alfred the Great examines the Danish campaigns that threatened the survival of Wessex in the ninth century. It follows Alfred’s reverses, refuge at Athelney and recovery before the Battle of Edington in 878, when his victory over Guthrum created the basis for a negotiated settlement.

The book then considers the fortified burhs, naval experiments and military organisation used to resist later attacks. By connecting battle narrative with political and logistical reform, it shows how Alfred’s response helped preserve an English kingdom and prepared the ground for later expansion against the Danelaw.
