The Thief’s Tale
Constantinople, 1481–1490. The Greek brothers Skiouros and Lykaion are taken through the devşirme system towards service in the Ottoman state. Skiouros escapes into the Christian quarters and survives as a thief, while Lykaion converts and advances within the Janissaries, leaving the brothers divided by the empire that has claimed them.
During the reign of Bayezid II, a stolen object exposes Skiouros to a conspiracy connected to the succession struggle with Cem Sultan. The brothers are forced to judge whether the Ottoman order is merely the power that conquered them or the fragile structure preventing greater bloodshed. Their opposing lives converge around a choice capable of changing the court.
