Kandaki, a Nubian princess, survives the murder of her parents when a usurper seizes their kingdom. Condemned as a sacrifice to a feared water dragon, she is instead rescued by Prahotep and Hathor, who have travelled south in search of other dragons.
The unlikely companions become involved in Kandaki’s attempt to recover her throne. Sieges, desert travel and political deception mix with fantasy as the story shifts its centre from Egypt to Nubia, where Kandaki’s determination and Prahotep’s improvisation are as important as Hathor’s strength in defeating the regime that displaced her family.
