Mary Grey is approached near Hadrian’s Wall by a man who believes she closely resembles Annabel Winslow, the missing heiress to the Whitescar estate. He proposes that Mary impersonate Annabel long enough to influence an inheritance, relying on the assumption that the real woman is dead or permanently absent.
Once inside the household, Mary discovers that every participant has withheld part of the truth and that old relationships remain dangerously active. Stewart turns the declining post-war estate into a stage for identity, possession and desire, with the imposture repeatedly threatened by memories that appear too exact to be borrowed.
