In present-day Oxfordshire, Lucy stays with her aunt at the historic Greys Court while grieving for her mother. Footprints in empty rooms, the scent of roses and visions of a woman in black draw her into a Tudor mystery embedded in the house. The novella combines contemporary bereavement with a historical haunting, using the investigation of the ghost’s identity to connect private loss with an unresolved past.

The haunting works because Lucy's own grief makes her receptive to a past that other visitors can treat as heritage. Researching the woman in black gives historical inquiry an emotional purpose: identifying the dead may help resolve an old injustice while forcing Lucy to consider how memory survives through place. The Tudor house becomes a meeting point between documented history, family story and supernatural experience.
