The connected lives begun in The Crooked Furrow continue as Oliver Dale and Clia try to build a future amid the practical demands of land, work and family. Their hopes are interrupted by violence and suspicion, turning an apparently domestic Georgian story into a murder mystery in which old relationships and new evidence place familiar characters under pressure.
Jasper Shrig’s investigation links the book to Farnol’s detective world without displacing the rural romance at its centre. Forest encounters, duels and escapes retain the author’s adventurous style, but the “harvest” of the title is also moral: choices made in the earlier novel produce consequences that must now be gathered. The book forms the middle part of a looser connected sequence culminating in Waif of the River.
