The Gift of Rain

Penang, 1939. Sixteen-year-old Philip Hutton, the son of an English father and a Chinese mother, feels divided between the communities and expectations that shape his family. His isolation changes when he meets Hayato Endo, a Japanese diplomat who rents a nearby island and teaches him aikido. Their intense friendship gives Philip discipline and a sense of belonging, but Endo’s knowledge of Penang and its influential families gradually reveals a purpose beyond companionship.

When Japanese forces invade Malaya, Philip discovers that the information he shared has helped prepare the occupation. He accepts a position beside Endo in the hope of protecting his relatives and neighbours, becoming compromised in the eyes of both occupiers and resistance fighters. As violence reaches the Hutton household, every attempt to save one person endangers another. The novel follows Philip from adolescence into morally ambiguous wartime adulthood, exploring collaboration, resistance, divided identity and the lasting cost of loyalty to a man whose duties oppose his own.
